Akkana is software consultant and author specializing in Linux and Open Source software, particularly Linux on the desktop, and in scientific software development.
I spent 7 years at Netscape developing Mozilla open source web browser and email technology, and have contracted at numerous other companies, including SGI, Sun, HP, and Apple.
I've also developed software for scientific labs and universities as well as open source applications, including data visualization, biological image processing, cellular automata research and astronomical predictions and visualizations.
I'm the author of the image editing book "Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional" (Apress) and am active in the GIMP community. I'm also a coordinator of LinuxChix.org, and volunteer for several other organizations, mostly as a web developer.
Fluent in numerous languages including Python, C, C++, JavaScript, plus some Ruby/Rails, Perl, Java, Lisp.
UI toolkits include GTK, Qt, Xlib, wxWindows, Motif and various Javascript packages.
I also enjoy writing, speaking at conferences or local gatherings, and teaching workshops.
